A Day Off; Diving, Dolphins, and Photoshoots

Most of February was spent doing some charters and working on the boat. We installed an extra solar panel, waxed the gel coat including the hull, among many other small projects. During all this work, we took a day to go spend time and take some pictures with David’s long-time friend Andre Musgrove. Andre is a dive guide, spearfisherman, and photographer, excelling at anything he does.

Coordinating our way to get to Andre and his boat took time; we had to get dropped off at a dock by friends on another boat and then find the right bus to take us the rest of the way. Once we were out on the boat, it was a gorgeous day. The water was flat and clear and the sun was out most of the time.

The first stop Andre chose for us was a 70-foot reef right before a drop-off. We were to swim down with only half of our wetsuits and no fins. David and I had only been back in the Bahamas for a few weeks and barely had time to do any deep diving in the past few months and additionally, the water was cold (we get too accustomed to our warm summer water). After multiple attempts of this shot, David was freezing and I was getting a little exhausted.

We moved locations to a shallower spot for the next shot. It was a beautiful wreck; we dove down with no fins and half our wetsuits again, but only to about 40 feet. It’s extremely rare to get the perfect shot on the first dive, but we got it within a few dives and moved onto the next spot.

The sun was coming out a little bit more and it felt a little warmer outside. We went to a shallow spot to make another one of Andre’s visions come to life. It felt like summer underwater, the water was a little bit warmer due to a shallower spot, and it was so pretty; an underwater garden. After a few attempts, Andre started screaming “dive dive dive”, I hesitated for half a second when I saw a dolphin swim right underneath David and I. Sometimes dolphins want to play, and other times they want nothing to do with us; this was one of those times. We continued to get our shoot and headed back to the marina soaking up the sun.
